Holy Roman Empire location codes
Explanation of used terminology
Reichskreise or Imperial Districts
Between 6 and 10 Reichskreise existed during the middle to late period
of the Holy Roman Empire and before 1803.
The districts were drawn up to satisfy the regional representation in
the Imperial Diet. They are still easily recognizable in todays
geography and in the names of the current German Länder or states.
If we look at the empire from the South we find the Austrian (1) and
Bavarian (2) regions there. As we move a little to the North we come
up with the Franconian (3) and Swabian (4) section and to their West
is the Burgundian (B) Reichskreis in today's Belgium, Luxemburg, with
portions in the Netherlands and western Germany.
Crossing back into Germany we run into the Palatine Electorate
of the Rhine (5) and the Upper Rhenish (6) regions. A little further
to the East is the Upper Saxon (7) and to the north the Lower Saxon
(8) and Lower Rhenish-Westphalian (9) sections of Germany. These entities which
held a seat at the Reichstag of the Holy
Roman Empire are coded in a geographical scheme as above.
Please be aware that these codes are only to be used under the major
code category of HRR (Holy Roman Empire / Heiliges Römisches Reich)
which in essence means that any event described under this scheme
dates from before 1806 when the Holy Roman Empire (the First Reich)
was dissolved by an act of Napoleon.
The areas are coded from 1 to 9 with X being a catch-all of other
places not directly in the Reich and still excluding the territories
of the Deutscher Orden (Teutonic Knights) in the Eastern areas which
evolved into Prussia outside of the Empire's boundaries. The states of
the Burgundischer Reichskreis, in today's Belgium, Luxemburg,
Netherlands, and border area of Germany, are coded B.
Used terminology
While it is a bit difficult to come up with exact English equivalents
for terms which never existed in the English world, a general idea of
what was what can be given. Time and place have a bearing here and
each type of land entity might have slightly different meaning in
various places and times.
In general, all of the listed principalities were
self-governing little countries within the Holy Roman Empire of the
German Nation. They might have various limitations as to whom they
might be beholden to as far as who the next highest lord or who has or
had granted the rights to self-governance. Generally all the names
with Reich in them like Reichsstadt were only accountable to the
Kaiser and then in rather limited form. Independence was always the
goal.
Abtei | Abbey |
Ballei | The Teutonic Knights (Deutscher Orden) segmented their land into such provinces. They had 12 of them. A Komptur or Landkomptur would be in charge of a Ballei. |
Burggrafentum | This is one of those more difficult concepts to translate. It goes back to early defensive fortifications which then developed into larger territories or even cities like Nürnberg. A Graf is a count, a Burg is a fortification. |
Deutscher Orden | The vernacular name in German comparable to the English use of Teutonic Knights. The original name of this order was Hospital of St. Maria of the Germans in Jerusalem. |
Erbtruchsesse | The Erb- part of the word denotes inheritance of the title. Truchsess itself comes from the function of taking care of the affairs of a higher lord similar to that of a Drost. Initially it was to set the table and make sure that enough food was available but over time this developed into a managemant capacity and the land being managed became more or less personal property to be passed onto one's hiers. |
Erzherzogtum | Erz = arch, Archduchy. |
Erzkurfürstbistum | Kur = to chose or elect, Fürstbistum = a diocese whose head is also a lay prince of the realm. |
Erzstift | Stift = a foundation, probably a rather old foundation which now made up an Archdiocese and all its associated funding and property. |
Frauenabtei | An abbey for women. |
Frauenstift | A stift for women, probably a cloister funded by the land around it. |
Fürstbistum | See above. |
Gefürstete | Something that has been entitled as a principality. |
Grafschaft | A principality whose ruler is a count. |
Herrlichkeit | Pretty much the same as a Herrschaft; typically it has been granted as a lien in perpetuity by a higher authority for services rendered and appropriate payment as per the lien arrangement. |
Herrschaft | See above. |
Herzogtum | Duchy |
Hochstift | Same as Erzstift but at the diocesan level. |
Kaiserreich | Empire |
Kirchspiel | Also known as a Glockenklang and initially the area within which the bells of the church could be heard. Later it became what we know as a parish. |
Klosterstift | The funded property of a cloister. |
Kommende | A term used by the Deutscher Orden for its smallest districts and generally a landed property which produced income. |
Königreich | Kingdom |
Kurfürstentum | The principality which held one of the eight votes and the rights to elect the emperor of the Holy Roman Empire. |
Landgrafschaft | A term first found in Thuringia where a Graf extended his rule over a larger territory and called himself count of the whole land. The term was of an expansionist nature. |
Mark | This means march or outlying territory which still has to be settled and colonized. |
Markgrafschaft | The governance over such a principality on the outreaches of the empire. |
Markgrafentum | Same as above. |
Propstei | A cloister and its associated territory under control of a Probst. He was not an Abbot but headed the cloister. A prior is a similar term and an abbot would be his boss. |
Reichsfürstabtei | An abbey which owned and managed its own land under privilege of the empire. The abbot would also be a prince who could sit in the Reichstag. |
Reichsherrschaft | A Herrschaft with privileges from the empire. |
Reichsprobstei | A cloister similar to the Reichsfürstabtei but smaller. |
Reichsstadt | An imperial free city. |
Reichsstift | A foundation set up by the empire. |
Rittersitz | A place where a knight had his castle or landed estate. |
Stift | Foundation. |
