The families Wijngaard and Ruijs

The genealogy data of Peter Wijngaard and spouse is divided in 4 ahnentafel books:

Besides the ahnentafel books the following data can be obtained:

The genealogical data does not contain information on living people. If people assumed to be living still, this is indicated by "Living person" with indexnumber. Full information on this person can be obtained from the database owner Peter Wijngaard.

Explanation location codes

The codes used to describe the locations were developed and used by the people behind the "Genealogical Research Directory" and the "Roots Surname Lists" and are a complex combination of the Chapman codes, the United States and Canadian postal codes, the three letter ISO codes for nations, and the Norwegian standard county codes. For a description of the codes, see Code Description.

If a location does not exist anymore, or belongs currently to a larger location, city or municipality, the current location name is between parenthesis. If a location did belong (in the past) to another country, kingdom or principality, the current country (and name) is between brackets.
The same location can belong to different countries, kingdoms or principalities for different periods in time. That is especially the case for locations in Germany, the German Empire and the Holy Roman Empire.

Name Colors

The names of all people on all pages are in different colors:

  • Black: the person has a direct relationship with Peter Wijngaard or Inge Ruijs.
  • Grey: there is no direct relationship of this person with Peter Wijngaard or Inge Ruijs. The person can be related by marriage.
  • Red: there is doubt that the parentage is true. The parentage is not proven from contemporaneous sources, but is more than likely to be correct. It is based on tradition, fits with what is known of the inheritance of land, and fits chronologically.

Software

The genealogy software used to store and retrieve all data is Brothers Keeper version 6.4. The HTML-pages and the Ahnentafel Books are build with the self-made software GEDSpecial version 1.0.

Ancestors of Wijngaard

The family Wijngaard has its roots in the province of Friesland, region Wymbritseradeel, in the north of the Netherlands. In the year 1875 Sytse Wijngaard moved from Friesland to Amsterdam, to find work and probably a better living. Many Frisian people did that in these days. His first house in Amsterdam still exist, it's in the Dolle Begijnensteeg. He later moved on to the Jordaan, a really working-class quarter of Amsterdam. He did run a lodging house over there. Sytse Wijngaard is an ancestor of the database owner Peter Wijngaard.
However, a part of the family stayed in Friesland, until now. They lived in Bolsward, Heeg, Achlum and Arum. For an impression how they lived at the beginning of the 20th century, see the postcard collection.

Sytse Wijngaard was born in Workum. The family Wijngaard lived there, and in the hamlet Nijhuizum near by for several centuries. Thanks to the research of mr. Bonnema, the oldest Wijngaard known until now is Jan Doekes, born about 1595 in Bozum. A lot of Frisian descendants of Jan are mentioned in the database like the Bonnema's, the Attema's, de Boer and Couperus.
Still a mystery is the choice of the name Wijngaard, by Jan Doekes in 1811. It is not a common Frisian name although the name Wijngaarden was often chosen as surname. Sources can be the small Frisian settlement Sint Jacobiparochie which in former days was named Wijngaarden (after the place where the inhabitants came from), or the region Wijngaarden (near Langezwaag, Friesland).

Via the marriage of Sybren Wijngaard (son of Sytse Wijngaard) with Helena Jansen, the family Wijngaard is related to the Hermsen family, a large family living in the United States of America. Also a link to Germany (families Niemeijer and Brinkel) is found via Helena.

Ancestors of Bakker

Not much is known yet from the patriach part of the Bakker family. The oldest Bakker known is Hendrik Bakker, a miller, born about 1780 in Amsterdam. His wife and her ancestors are all coming from Amsterdam (as far as we know now).

We know more from the families of the wifes of the Bakker family. From Marijke Hulscher (married with Hendrikus Gerardus Bakker), we know that she also came from Friesland, the city Akkrum in Haskerland. Her ancestors lived in Haskerland for centuries. Several common Frisian names pop up in these ancestor data like Hulscher, Algra, Schepen and Haanstra.
The ancestors of Sibbelina van Kooten, the wife of Cornelis Bakker, are also Frisian. They came from Workum, like the Wijngaard family. A common change of name occurs, the name of the father of Sibbelina is not Jan van Kooten (assumed for several years), but Jan Koten. An old branch in this family is the lineage of Aaltje Foppes Teernstra (wife of Klaas Harings de Vries, grandfather of Aaltje de Vries who was the wife of Jan Koten), going back to Jan Tiercks van Teerns (born at the end of the 16th century). This is a good example of naming themselves after the place they were coming from, i.c. Teerns.

Another old branch found is the genealogy of Borghouts (related to the Bakker family via a marriage between Hendrik Bakker and Cornelia Johanna Borghouts in 1857). The Borghouts family is old (and quite complete). They are coming from Bergen op Zoom, in the province of North-Brabant, in the south of the Netherlands. The oldest Borghouts known is Hendrik Borcouts, born about 1590 in Tongelre, North-Brabant. They were important people like mayors and sheriffs.

Ancestors of Ruijs

The Ruijs family is widely spread over the Netherlands. This part of the family is living for centuries in the province of Gelderland, the Netherlands. They were living in Lunteren, Bennekom, Achterberg, Rhenen and finally in Wageningen. Their occupations were mainly tobacco-planters. There was a lot of tobacco-culture in Gelderland, mainly in the Gelderse Vallei, in the 18th and 19th century. The last proof of this culture is the well-known sigar-factory Schimmelpenninck in Wageningen.

The oldest Ruijs known so far is Gijsbert Arissen (complete name Gijsbert Arissen op 't Heyvelt), born about 1650, probably in Lunteren. Another old branch is the family Rijkse, related to Ruijs by marriage between Geertruida Rijkse and Gerrit Ruijs in 1902. The oldest known Rijkse is Rijk Rijkse, born about 1725, probably in Rhenen.

A very old branch found contains the ancestors of Geertruij Jansen Schuurmans (married with Pieter van Prattenburg, 20-11-1718 in Rhenen, he is the 4th great grand father of Geertruida Rijkse). This branch goes back till Gerrit Schuirmans, born about 1360 in Ede. Geertruij is buried in the Cunera-church in Rhenen.

A very solid research was done by Willem Ruisch, he determined almost the complete genealogy of Arissen with a lot of Ruijsch and Ruisch members of the family.

Ancestors of Troost

The Troost family has her roots in Rotterdam and the small townships around Rotterdam like Pernis, Schiedam, Charlois and Delfshaven. A lot of old branches have been found in Charlois.
Via Roelof Cranendonck van Emmichoven, a link (although not 100% proven yet) is made to the old noble, medieval houses living in the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium and France. And finally to Charlemagne or Charles the Great (and further). This all has to be explored more in detail.

[To be extended.....]
